It made me miss my sisters (even though they are much younger and tinier than I am) . But also, how effing awesome is Giovanna's outfit? This is not goodbye, this is an admission that right now some other things (namely work) have taken center stage and I will be blogging less frequently for a bit. I have to say, having this blog has been such an outlet for all the little thoughts and observations I have on design, fashion, weddings, music, food, and everything else but there just aren't enough hours in the day. I'm sure I won't be able to keep those observations to myself (well and PB) for long, so I'll be around, and I'll definitely be reading all the wonderful blogs I've discovered to keep myself inspired. Thanks to those who have been checking in regularly, it means a lot to me to know that anyone besides myself actually likes those little things that keep me happy and inspired every day.

What a difference a lamp makes

I am an avid follower of Apartment Therapy's Scavenger (that's how I got my Bertoia wire chairs). So I literally jumped when I saw this lamp (originally 400) for a mere 150. It took us a bit of time to get it hung in our living room, but I swear it has made the entire room more chic.

Wednesday = Halfway

My goal for last weekend was just to relax. In fact, I can't remember a weekend when I cared so little about organizing or straightening up. On Friday we had a wonderful dinner at Capital Grille.* It was one of those beautiful nights with great cocktails, views of the capital, wedge salads, and flowing conversation. Then, on Saturday we slept in and lounged around with Grizzly (do you think dogs understand what a hug is? Or do they just think, "huh, this is odd"). And on Sunday I had my Russian lessons and then saw the King's Speech (Have you seen it yet? It is really quite stunning). Then we went to Georgetown and ate crabcakes and friend shrimp at Tacklebox.
This weekend I am looking forward to getting drinks with my lady friends on Friday and a game meat themed dinner party on Saturday....oh and an 8 mile run on Sunday. You?

**We had a wonderful time, and the food was great, but if you just want a great steak in the DC area, go to Ray's the Steaks: it's about half the price and just as good if not better (but you don't get a view of the Capital).

This week, GB is sharing some beautiful pictures from her honeymoon to the Iberian peninsula (plus Morocco). I went to Portugal in college, but I am wishing I had checked out the Algarve, her trip looks amazing! (PS. have I mentioned that I love GB because she is such a history stud before?)

Okay, this post is neither about Portuguese princes nor candy bars, but we did hear a lot about the famous seafaring royal when we explored the Algarve for a couple days in November. It was pretty sleepy then, as most tourists (mostly European) flock for the cove-like beaches in summer, but you have to admit - there are certain benefits to that:

We stayed at a super cute luxury boutique hotel just outside Lagos, called the Quinta Bonita. You know that smell that all spas seem to have wafting around? That is what greeted us every time we walked into the lobby - how can I do that at home?

This was one corner of the garden (the orange grove on the other side supplied fresh juice in the mornings):

Anyway, I think it's safe to say that even ole' Prince Henry didn't have it as nice (hooray for jacuzzi tubs!). Plus, the British couple that runs the hotel is super friendly - that may not have been the case in the 1400s...

Catching up

As I said on Friday, things have been a little crazy around here, not much time for noodling around on the interweb. When I did get a chance this weekend to catch-up on my street style blogs I saw a lot that I liked. As always my eye was drawn to combinations of tight black pants and blazers with boots, opaque tights, long hair, scarves, flared pants with billowy blouses, lots of black, even more grey, and a touch of camel thrown in. I'm so happy it will be starting to warm up soon and I can ditch my winter coat and roll up my sleeves.

Cooking Spaghetti Squash gratin

Ever since I saw this recipe for Spaghetti Squash gratin I've been looking for a chance to make it, and it did not disappoint. It does take about 3 hours, but a lot of that time is just waiting for the squash to initially bake and then for the gratin to bake.

The quick and dirty: Roast an entire spaghetti squash (after first making some small incisions)for an hour at 375, then remove the squash and let it cool. While cooling, chop up an entire onion, about 3 cloves of garlic, grate a few ounces of Gruyere, and rip up 2 tablespoons of basil. Once cool, you can remove all the seeds from the squash (and discard) and then scoop out the spaghetti squash. You only need about half the squash, so bag the other half and put it in the freezer for another time. Then start to sautee the onions for a few minutes, slowly adding in the garlic, spaghetti squash and some salt and pepper. Once everything is all nice and soft combine everything you've sauteed with 3 eggs and milk (beaten together) and the Gruyere and basil. Once everything is evenly distributed, pour the whole thing into a greased 3 quart pot and sprinkle shaved Parmesan on top of it all. Then toss it back in the oven for 45 minutes, take it out, and let it cool for 15...and voila!

Okay, so that was not so quick...or so dirty, but I do recommend the dish. I also recommend throwing in a little bacon or sausage (it only has 179 calories a serving, so you can do it and it will still be healthy).

So after my first cruise experience, I still don't think I'm a cruise person, but I am definitely a sun and Mexican food person (oh and margaritas, please). While it was a bit windy and even rainy we managed to see the sun and eat some delicious mole and tortilla soup in Cozumel. And I definitely feel recharged for a few more months of winter. This weekend I'm looking forward to finally organizing a few areas of our apartment and starting back up some foreign language tutoring (that is, I'll be tutored). What are you looking forward to?

Parasols

You see them in so many outdoor weddings and they look so cool. But if you're like me, you think "Meh, do I really need this? Probably not." Well, about two weeks before the wedding, I started thinking about how our wedding was in an ENORMOUS park space and all the cute pinwheels and cranes we had labored over making could get lost in the vast, green expanse. I decided that I needed more big, colorful things floating around and parasols fit the bill. So, I ordered twenty parasols from Jadetime.com and bought a shiny red bucket at IKEA to hold them.

I love the antique woods and blown glass lights and they way they contrast against the stainless steel. But mostly I just love how open it is--even to the outside. It seems like the perfect place to host a dinner party...Something tells me that if I want a kitchen like that in DC, I'm going to have to build it myself.

Bright and Beautiful

It started when I asked my hairdresser to color my hair "ombre." Actually, I just wanted it to look like this, like grown out highlights. After having had very dark hair for the past 4 years, even a little lightness seemed like a big change. But now I've been wanting to change everything up, including my beauty routine (which is ridiculously minimal). I've all but abandoned using things like toner or multiple forms of moisturizer, but I also stopped really doing much make-up wise besides a red lip here and there. So I've been searching through the new Refinery 29 spring make-up guides and Into the Gloss (my newest favorite blog) for some ideas. I haven't made any new purchases yet, but here's what I like. Playing with a bit more eyeliner by lining the whole eye and experimenting with color or alternatively (because both at once could be deadly) peachy cheeks and lips.
And I may just be stealing these ladies' skin care tricks, because I'm loving the fresh faces they've got here. (all bottom photos via Into the Gloss)

When I lived in LA, I used to be listen to this show Morning Becomes Electic on LA's KCRW radio station while getting ready in the morning. But because of podcasts, I can still find out about new bands despite living in a city with...I'm sorry but the worst selection of radio stations in the country. But I digress, this is how I came across Matt & Kim, a two member band from Brooklyn who you may have heard on some beer commercial if you're not already familar with them. It sounds like your two (much cooler ) friends banging around in the basement, except they create well crafted pop songs that are devastating catchy.

The perfect space to listen to this kind of music is definitely not put together by an interior designer, or even a blogger, it's probably actually a dorm room. It's ammature, but stylish and comfortable. And it's definitely bright and colorful, because even though I'd love to hear them play in a dark club the music is unassailably happy.

And if you're listening to this kind of music, you're definitely wearing something you don't mind getting a little sweaty in so you can contribute to the handclaps and stomping that appear in almost all the songs (man I love me some handclapping). It's young, hip, and modern and doesn't take itself too seriously. Probably a lot of jersey, crazy shoes and sunglasses, and definitely layered.

Actually today is sort of my Friday. PB and I are actually going on a cruise with some of our best friends for 5 days. I was extremely skeptical about just sitting on a boat in the past, but it's been so cold and windy this winter, I can't wait to just let the warmth of the sun seep into my bones (with sunscreen on, of course). Pinwheels, Part 3

What would I do without GB? I love her weekly doses of DiY inspiration! She made the cutest pinwheels for her wedding, and here she offers instructions for pinwheel boutonnieres.

Did I mention that there are A LOT of pinwheel ideas out there? This time, we're going to talk about pinwheel boutonnieres. Since the girls would have pinwheels in their bouquets, it seemed like a wonderful balance to have the guys wearing a pinwheel on their lapel (or suspenders, in our case).

This wedding on Ruffled featured lots of pinwheel ideas, but in my notes its the only one with boutonnieres. And if you're not into making them yourself, this bride sourced from Twirlie Whirlies - yay! Etsy!

I found some neat, old-fashioned looking brass buttons in the discount section of Britex Fabrics, which also supplied the pin backings and an industrial strength glue. You can find my detailed how-to in my Ruffled DIY Contest entry.

We finally got our new couch in (we delayed it a bit until we were sure Grizz wouldn't kill it) and it looks great. But the first thing PB said about it was that it would look better on some great floors. So here's what I'm craving.

1) Hardwood floors: distressed, bleached, chevron, dark finishes, I'll take any of it. And I'd love to have a beach house somewhere with stenciled floors...

2) Tile. I love the look of tile when it's out of the kitchen and bathroom and brought into more formal spaces to give it just a touch of foreign flair.3) Concrete. I love how clean and urban concrete looks. At the same time, it can be very mediterranean looking and can also be stenciled or painted. 4. white floors. Oh so Scandanavian, nice and clean and dramatic.

This is my second look at some ideas on how to arrange small spaces for my friend, Angela's possible new Hong Kong digs. It seems to me that a big part of living in cramped quarters is trying to carve out a little space for yourself, so that when your guests come over you don't feel like they have the whole run of the place but so that they're also not so cramped.

Curtains clearly seem to be one of the easiest ways to hide your bed. And if you have an architectural detail that helps with that, so much the better.

A little less obvious, but possibly more time consuming (and probably requiring a hammer, some wire, and some of those screw with little hooks on them) is hanging art as a little improptu wall. Doesn't this look super modern and fresh?

Shelving is also a commonly used solution to break up two walls. The woman in the apartment below, made a custom thin shelf to turn the little dining area into a bedroom. I know that a murphy bed is a little beyond your basic DIY, but I just thought the beautiful wood (fake) on the example below was proof that murphy beds can actually be hidden and can even look classy. Okay this last one is probably also beyond the reach of a lot of basic DIY-ers but it was so clever, I had to include it. Basically the bed is set off from the rest of the room by a large screen on which he can project films to watch either from his bed or from the couch. Despite how sophisticated this is, it got me thinking that actually an old projection screen could make a great room divide. via. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

I had such a great weekend. My sister had to go to New York so I got to spend Saturday with her, eating brunch at Cafe Atlantico, checking out the Lincoln Memorial and going through the holocaust museum. But most of the weekend was devoted to preparing for out Vietnamese dinner party on Sunday. We made mini bahn mi (that were so good, I didn't get pictures), pork belly lettuce wraps, shaking beef, and vietnamese coffee ice cream. I'm actually pretty proud of how my center piece turned out. I have absolutely no plans for this weekend and I'm so happy about it. I plan on getting back on my half-marathon training, introducing Grizz to puppy daycare, and hopefully meeting up with my lady friends for some drinks or some other such merriment. What are your plans?

Wedding "Logo"

There's a reason marketing departments in companies everywhere spend millions on branding - in the mind of consumers and customers, it's VERY closely associated with who and what you're about. Logos are critical visual components of a brand. They are carefully designed and then used in as many places as possible to reinforce the brand.

So what does that have to do with a wedding? Well, not much really. But it DOES have to do with creating a memorable experience. It's also another excuse to make something beautiful and creative. Yay!

This bride, featured on Green Wedding Shoes, talks about having a friend that designed their "logo" that they used on everything from bags to flags, and I even noticed they recreated it on their chalkboard sign :)

This one on 100 Layer Cake is adorable and you can definitely see how they reused their "icons" in lots of creative ways. It was clear from their photos that he is the beaker and she is the cupcake - so cute!:

This other one on 100 Layer Cake uses a familiar image (on the left), but tweaked for the couple. It basically leverages the Toulouse-Lautrec image already in your memory bank, which is very clever:

This one from Ruffled is a sweetly simple logo stamp. Thanks to M's tip from her wedding, you could look into having a custom stamp made at Paperwink:

Almost as soon as we set a date, I sat down and designed a small, 2"x2" linocut that I could use on various decorations. I didn't really occur to me until later that I had just created the logo for our wedding:

Let it All Hang Out

My friend Angela recently moved to Hong Kong to persue an amazing job opportunity. Unfortuantely, however, HK real estate is ridiculously expensive and she will inevitably be living in cramped quarters. She asked for a few tips on how she might maximize her space, and I naturally turned to Apartment Therapy to see what sorts of solutions are out there. But there was just so much there that I wanted to break it down into a couple of posts. So in this late Friday hour I just wanted to showcase some clothing storage options, well one, and that is not stornig your clothing at all.

I think most Americans are pretty spoiled when it comes to closet size, but a lot of countries with more historic buildings just don't have built in closets. No problem though, if you have beautiful clothing (and I know Angela does) why not display it for everyone to admire. Or even better, display your shoes.

Coming Home

Are there spaces you just keep coming back to? We are getting a new hanging lamp for our living/dining (when you're in a 700 ft. apartment does it matter what room you call it?) and it had me suddenly questioning what I'm actually aiming for.* But thank god for this house from M design, it reminds of the final look I'd love to achieve (maybe on a slightly less over the top scale).

Last week's travel delays also delayed me posting a few of my favorite images from our Christmas weekend. We were super brave this year and flew with Grizz to both of our parents homes, but I'm so glad we did because it was great to really experience being part of two wonderful families (awwwww). In Kansas City, we went to the Kemper museum of modern art and ate effing delicious pastrami sandwiches at their Cafe Sebastienne. But beyond that, we mostly hung out at home eating delicious peanut butter balls and watching Grizz play with his cousin Gracie (who he has missed desperately since we returned). And isn't PB's Mom's table beautiful?

In San Francisco, we had ridiculously rich seafood stew for Christmas eve with iceberg wedges and blue cheese. And isn't our tree beautiful? My parents call their trees Uma Thurman trees (tall, skinny, and graceful). Before we left, I invited all my "hometown" friends over to make pizzas and drink wine in the kitchen. It is definitely a repeat event.

This weekend I'm looking forward to having a girl's night out on Friday, a visit from my sister on Saturday, and on Sunday we're having friends over for a French-Vietnamese dinner party. What are you looking forward to?

Vintage cars at weddings

Are you planning on having a fancy car at your wedding? PB and I just had your traditional-type limo, but we are definitely not the car person that GB's husband is. Read more below!

This is one I really can't take credit for: I haven't owned a car since high school, but my husband owns a couple and they are all at least 20 years old. While I don't think I'll ever share his level of enthusiasm (or knowledge), his love of vintage cars has rubbed off on me. I'm even printing a series on them. But can you blame me? They have so much style - I don't think of them functional devices, but creations from another time, with personality. So, there was DEFINITELY going to be a car element at our wedding. And TD took that job (well, he assigned it in the first place, really) without hesitation!

But looking around, vintage cars pop up in a lot of great-looking weddings. Whether it's shiny and restored or old and weathered, that style and personality really adds something. Here's a couple that stand out:

Where have you been, Hotel Boca Chica?

There I am just a browsing through Aubrey Road the other day when what? Is that a Mexican/Mid-Century modern styled hotel? In Cancun? why yes it is, Hotel Boca Chica. You see, I am way into the Mexican thing (hello sculls and bright colors) and I have a hard time balancing that look with my love for vintage/midcentury looks. But I love love love the way they've done it here. So clean and bright with just a pop of color. Another completely different way to mix midcentury modern and Spanish/latin themes here.

Goodbye 2010

Well after a flight cancellation, long layovers, and rerouting I'm back just in time to ring in the new year (with a really relaxed celebration). But before I look forward, I just wanted to take a moment to look backward over my past year (almost) of blogging.

In March, I pulled together several round-ups of wedding decor (menus and table scapes) while organizing my own wedding and philosophizing on the similarities between the fashion of the Sound of Music and Louis Vuiton. PB and I also went to Chicago where we ate delicious food at the Publican.

In April, I mused on how I could translate Miu Miu's line into my own wardrobe, searched for some amazing wedding flats, and pondered the best way to hang loose photos on the wall.

In May, I finally made my first cooking post and examined gray bedrooms while experiencing my first pangs for bootcut and wideleg pants.

In June, I discovered freunde von freunden and got carried away with Berlin style and finally stopped protesting and got a veil (but only after careful consideration). PB and I also successfully painted our kitchen with chalkboard walls.

In July, I suffered my first bouts of anxiety about any and all decisions I was making about the wedding. PB and I took a trip to California for our friends' wedding and to complete some last minute planning . I also went crazy for Acapulco chairs and petticoats.

In August, I prepared for back to school dressing (even if I'm out of school), PB and I finally ate some spaghetti after months of South Beach diet, and I went to New York for my bachelorette party. I also gushed about Scandinavian style and adorable weddings.

After months of talking about the big day, in September, PB and I finally got married and took our amazing trip to Argentina and Brazil.
October was a super busy month. PB and I first met Grizzly and started puppy proofing our apartment (that is, learning to put my shoes in my closet). GB started writing a weekly post on incredibly easy but super cute DiY projects for weddings, and I...contemplated the relationship between music, fashion, and interior design. I also sighed for pink walls and delicious sushi from Kushi.

In November, I became....well obsessed with decorating our place for Christmas (and anthropologie didn't help) and cooking delicious warm Sunday meals. Not surprisingly, I continued to analyze the perfect fall look, including fur hats and hair.
By December, I finally stopped obsessing and starting actually decorating. And I was super excited when I found these Bertoia style chairs on craigslist and started thinking about how best to use them (I still haven't decided). And I couldn't help sharing my real and not-so-real Christmas lists.I have loved having this space to talk about all the cool and beautiful things I see out there and how I try to incorporate them into my life. Last Minute Gift Ideas

Okay, so you're in panic mode. It's the 24th and you are short a couple gifts. Plus, you're in (insert Midwestern city that does not offend anyone) and there's no cute little boutique to run to. Here are a few ideas:

1) Booze. I think you really can be classy about this if you know what kind of alcohol your intended recipient loves. Does your brother love a good scotch? Did your BFF study in Chile and always fondly remembers her trip to the winery? Seriously, hit up a good liquor/wine store and talk to the people who work there about your options.

2) Hit up your CVS/ Duane Reed! I am always seriously impressed with the variety of products that local drug stores carry. The one around the corner from us often has Bumble and Bumble and even Kerastese hair products. Who wouldn't love some shmancy shampoo or facial toner? 3) Gift Certificates. This one is so easy, everyone would love a free manicure, massage, facial, beard trim, pilates lesson. If you don't have time to actually go and get a certificate, I like printing out a pretty picture (like the one below), wrapping it up, and then let them know you'd love to take them for said indulgence.

4) Whole Foods. You might feel weird about this, but dude, the store has lots of great body products, delicious chocolate, and lots of scented candles. Once you wrap it up pretty, they'll never know the difference.

Wednesday = Halfway (well not really this week)

I'm only working one day this week, so I don't really need a countdown to get me to the weekend but I still just wanted to share a few pictures from my last weekend. On Friday night we went to the speakeasy PX, in Old Town Arlington. I had this dumpling drink that was maybe a little too authentic for my tastes but overall the place was gorgeous. Then we headed down to the Majestic where I got these ridiculous mussels with pancetta and apples.

We also have Grizzly his first bath. I was super worried he would be splashing around the whole time, but I think he was more scared than anything else. PB made me some delicious pork Carnitas a la Rick Bayless. And we experimented with some Vietnamese Coffee ice cream (oh...I highly recommend). It's basically all sugar from the condensed milk, but I made it with stumptown espresso and it is mouthwateringly good.

And next weekend....is Christmas. We'll be in California with my family and I'm so excited to introduce Grizz to the family. What are your plans?

Typewriter Guest Book

I've always felt that guestbooks are a great opportunity to do something a little bit different and out of the ordinary. Today, GB does a how-to on one of my favorite styles.

My darling cousin made our guestbook, but when I thought I would be doing something, I really liked the idea of a typewriter guest book. I found another blogging bride who shares her story of searching (and finding) a vintage typewriter for her wedding, as well as photos from a typewriter-themed wedding on Style Me Pretty.

I did some searching around and there are a number of vintage typewriters for sale under $300 in the Bargain Basement of the Vintage Typewriter Shoppe. There are a number of affordable vintage ones on this vintage appliance site. My Typewriter has some very cute ones that are bit more expensive, but they also have supplies (and jewelry!) that might be useful. Of course, the easiest place to find an affordable vintage or retro typewriter is on eBay or your local thrift store. If you do go that route and want it to be functional for the guest book, give yourself enough time to give it a test run and take it for a tuning if necessary.

Raindrops and Roses and Burberry Prorsum

As I briefly mentioned on Friday, I am obsessed with pre-fall 2011 Burberry Prorsum. Actually, I am just plain obsessed with all Burberry Prorsum. Christopher Bailey can do no wrong in my book. But I especially obsessed with the line of this season. I love the wide leg, and tiny waist accented with a belt, and then big fur trimmed sleeves.
And I'm normally not one for flowy empire waisted peasant dresses...but man! throw a little fur and leather and some amazingly sexy boots and it doesn't feel hippie dippie at all. And yes, I've noticed that it is completely 70's. Okay, where do I get an obie belt?

When it comes to Christmas gifts, I usually ask for the little things that I've been wanting but for some reason just won't (or can't as the situation may be) buy for myself. I believe all the relevant parties have been notified of my desires for this year well in advance. But I thought I'd share my list here, maybe you know a nerd with a penchant for design and fashion who would want similar items....

1. A flower from Emmerson Made. I can't wait to wear this with my camel coat. 2. Some new nail polishes. I have been coveting these very "now" Chanel polishes for awhile.3. Some new perfume. I believe I narrowed it down to Stella and Burberry Pop. 4. A new pencil skirt. I really cannot imagine my work wardrobe without them.5. Cooking classes for Blair and me. I am especially in need of a good knife skills class.
6. Fuji Instax. Ever since all my Polaroid film expired I've been looking for a suitable replacement. PB and I love taking instant pictures while traveling.

7. An everyday bag. Last year I was lucky enough to get a nice designer bag, but it started wearing down super fast, this seems like it would be great for day in and out use.

Since I am definitely not working a full week next week, this week has seemed especially long. But I made it to Wednesday....just a bit more to go. Last weekend, we celebrated my friend's new job in Hong Kong at Domku with delicious Swedish meatballs and lamb burgers and very strong cocktails. And on Sunday I did a little Christmas shopping and finally finished my Christmas decorations while PB made me braised short ribs.

Yep, there's my felt ball garland. I am so happy with how it turned out. I seriously want to make these for every occasion now!

This weekend we're going to go on a date to the Gibson, meet our friends' new puppy, and pack up for our trip to visit our families for Christmas. And we're so excited that Grizzly is getting his final shots so he can start playing with other dogs. What do you have planned?

Time for some more fun DIY tips from the always delightfully clever GB. We didn't have a map at our wedding and I so wish that we did, so many people got lost!

Cartography is a lost art. First there was Rand McNally and now there's Google Maps. What's left to map?

Enter the subjective map: a map of a specific time and place. Like a wedding! Scale is not measured on physical distance but by emotional or temporal importance. In addition to being an opportunity to make something beautiful and clever, a map provides a very important function for guests (uh, where am I supposed to go now?). Some favorites:

Masculine v. Feminine

You may recall that I often struggle with balancing out my differing design desires: coolness vs. cuteness or bohemian vs. refined (here and here). But in some ways it's totally a clash of masculine and feminine influenced spaces. The other day I was totally blown away by this Norwegian space that I on saw on Decor8. So wonderfully frilly and sparkly and light. Totally gorgeous! But when the new Lonny came, I fell head over heels for this space by the head of J.Crew men's design. That eames, the artful arranging of books, the stark Danish modern wood and colorful posters. A perfect mid century modern with even earlier Victorian dashes here and there. I'm sure in the end my space has ended up benefiting from both these influences, but sometimes it seems like it could be better if I just decided on one...

Pinwheels, Part 2 - The Alternative Bouquet

Hi Everyone, GB has come up with another great DIY wedding post. You have to look at these ideas, they are so great and easy to do.

The Bouquet Situation: To fit our budget, I knew we were going to be skipping a professional florist and, as much as I would have loved to arrange our bouquets myself, I also knew that that kind of activity is very time sensitive and I didn't want to have that stress in the 36 hour window before the wedding.

Turns out there are a lot of fun alternatives to traditional flower bouquets (Green Wedding Shoes just did a feature on brooch bouquets). As discussed before, TD and I had pinwheel decorations in mind from early on, so that was a natural starting point.

Before I get around to posting my actual Christmas list, I thought I'd take a little trip to fantasy land. If this list wouldn't put my husband, friends, and family into the poor house, here's what I'd ask for:

1. Classic Quilted Channel foldover bag. Definitely in red.

2. Eames armchair and ottoman. 3. Kate Spade Palace of Mirror bib necklace. Actually pretty much any jewelry from Kate Spade, so huge, colorful and retro! 4. Chloe flat riding boots (dying over that nude color). 5. Anything from Thom Browne's Spring/Summer 2011 collection. I am completely taken by that 70's look totally deconstructed and revamped for Spring. 6. A private pilates lesson every morning, it is the best way to start your day.
8. A trip to Bora Bora. Normally I am more a fan of visiting urban locales with tons of bars, museums, and shopping but these pictures of Bora Bora have convinced me it's on my must go to list.

Wednesday = Half-Way

Admittedly, this is not from my last weekend. My pictures from New York left a bit to be desired and in any case I mostly was just working in Times Square, so I wanted to recall a different weekend: from my honeymoon. Behold Iguazu falls!
While I'm plenty proud of my pictures, I just could not capture the Majesty and enormity of this natural wonder. If you take a trip to Argentina/ Brazil, I strongly recommend you make a side trip out there. Oh and stay in the Loi Suites.

This weekend, I'm saying goodbye to one of my best friends in DC as she leaves for an awesome new position in Hong Kong. While I don't want to send her off, I'm looking forward to delicious Slavic/Scandinavian food at Domku and a rollicking good time at the Looking Glass. Also getting me through the week is the prospect of finishing my Christmas decorating and cuddling on the couch with Grizzly and PB and drinking peppermint tea.

DIY Hanging Lamps

I have a little problem (don't I always?): we need to hang a lamp over our dining room table, but the ceiling is impervious to screws and nails, and most lamps are too heavy for an adhesive hook. But I've come across two beautiful DIY lamps recently that look light enough to work. If I end up making one of them I'll definietly show you the results.

Inspired by the XX

I have gotten really into the boy/girl duo, the XX. I don't know what it is about the combination of male and female voices but there's something very intimate and sweet about it. Using a lot of drum machines and interpol like guitar rifts, the music is spare, cool, and modern. And while I tend to like over the top drama in music ( a la Animal Collective or Arcade Fire) I really enjoy how refreshingly tidy, spare, and modern the XX is. But contrasted against the clean beats are some quite sexy lyrics that keep you listening closely. And whether it's their 80's reminiscent sound or their black album cover somehow I can't help feeling it's just a tad goth in that Cure or Smiths kinda way.

I wanted to find some looks that really personified the relaxed coolness of the band. The "I can't be bothered to find a drummer so I'm using this drum machine" aspect of the XX combined with some seriously sexy lyrics called out to me to find some understatedly sexy and dark outfits. The cut of the clothing is clean and a bit androgynous, but always with messy hair, and a little sex appeal.

In terms of interiors, I wanted to find spaces that were equally modern, clean and free of clutter. I was drawn to a lot of spaces with bright white walls and dark furniture. The look is elegant, but relaxed and full of lots of empty space. And I definitely wanted rooms with lots of animal fur and hide for that jolt of soft contrast.

Bertoia Wire Chairs

I forgot to bring my camera to thanksgiving....actually I remembered to bring it, but I forgot to bring the card. So this will be a true "weekend" (only Saturday and Sunday). This past weekend was filled with leftover sandwiches. I love turkey, mayo, lettuce, tomato, and cranberry sauce, I'm seriously, still not sick of it. On Saturday I saw Nicole at Parlor Salon, and I decided to change it up a bit by actually going... gasp, lighter. But just a little bit in front, I can't go back to full highlights...not yet at least. Saturday night, PB and I made our signature cocktail and Caesar salads and watched The Bill Chill. And of course, a good deal of time was spent on the couch with Grizzly. He has been a real pain in the you know what this week, it's a good thing he's so cute.

This weekend I'm heading up to New York but unfortunately to attend a 2 day lecture. Still, I'm excited to see all the Christmas decorations and catch up with some friends. What do you have planned?

Self-serve Refreshments

Today GB has some super helpful details for your own DiY wedding out there. I personally die for cucumber water. Why does it taste so damn good?

When you're going through the wedding planning process, you eventually hit the Wave of Practical Details. Among these are basic hydration arrangements for your guests... because dehydrated guests are not what you want. This may be part of your catering or venue package (and I recommend double checking that they have a plan), but if your wedding is outdoors or at all DIY then you probably need to figure out how your guests are going to wet their whistle with something other than whiskey and wine. This includes the standing around time BEFORE the ceremony. A self-serve beverage bar is an affordable alternative to paying for bar staff to come a couple hours early just to hand out water. While it's practical and low-budget, it doesn't have to look cheap.

We borrowed a dispenser from a friend and bought another one to use and have around after the wedding. Keeping it simple, but with a touch of class, we served two flavored waters: orange and cucumber:

The creative opportunities here are labels for the beverages, decorations for the table, and the beverages themselves (um, anyone want to make horchata? Cause that sounds delicious). I made a cut-paper sign ("Refresh") and some festive oilcloth, which I bought by the roll here.

On the nuts and bolts side, it's a good idea to start researching available beverage dispensers early. Borrow as many as you can and give plenty of time for ordering any additional ones you need to buy as stores may not carry too many of these in inventory, if at all. I've already mentioned how much I love Christmas (here and here). I sometimes think it's silly to spend so much time discussing decorations for a day that I won't even be at home. But, something about sparkly lights and ornaments just makes those short days and windy nights easier to deal with. I've been so inspired by some great ideas out there, I thought I'd refer you to just a couple in case you are totally bored by your normal inspiration.

I am loving these more natural design ideas from Bo Bedre, via Emma's Design Blog. I mean if you've got that all white Scandinavian design thing going on, you might as well just add some green and red and you're already there. These natural looks use a lot of antlers (the perfect answer to indie decorators who love Christmas) big branches, rough linens, and leaves.

And I can't get over this more urban Christmas scheme on Ikea's Christmas Decoration blog. I love the assortment of unmatching chairs, Christmas cards, and bulbs. In the end, isn't that how our Christmas tables always end up looking when we have a nice full house? It's definitely an organized chaos look that suits those of us who have trouble saying no to a sparkly bulb.

And I have been flipping out for this technicolor Christmas spread from Rue Magazine since I first saw it. How much do you love those streamers coming down the wall? What inspiration have you been drawing from?

Wednesday = Friday (Thanksgiving Week)

I'm starting to think that this post should just be called "what I ate this weekend." I guess it's pretty clear where my interests lie. I had another fantastic weekend. Friday night I went to Lyon Hall for dinner where I had an amazing wurst. Then Saturday morning, PB and I went out to Tyson's corner where I may or may not have spent $50 on some adjoining mittens. We also had some friends over for an amazing dinner (so amazing I forgot to take pictures). PB made this steak salad and this sweet potato soup.

Then on Sunday I met one of my hippest friends at the farmers market where I picked up some orange cauliflower for Thanksgiving and some pork shoulder (that PB turned into a great Sunday dinner). And I discovered Filter. Finally a new non-starbucks cafe in NW!

Okay, kids, have a happy thanksgiving!

Cut-paper Signs

GB has some more great little DIY's from her beautiful wedding today. But I totally think these would be easy to do for a big thanksgiving party as well, don't you?

We already covered big chalkboard signs, which can either serve as big roadside signs to direct traffic or convey a ton of detailed menu information in one place. But there can be a need for lots of little signs, especially at an outdoor wedding, if only to label basic facilities or leave a message for guests.

First, a little sampling of small signs from weddings around the blogosphere:

I used the little signs to have some pops of color, using cut paper.

First, I scoured some old magazines for full-page photos. A largely monochromatic image works best, or black and white photography. I got a little extra fancy by picking images that were relevant to what they would be conveying: I found a page of old-fashioned lined paper for our "guest book" sign since guests would be writing and for our "favors" sign, I found an image of growing crops since our favors were marigold seeds, etc.
Next, I outlined where the letters would go BEFORE I started cutting. I find it helpful to center the middle letter(s) and work out from there. I also like to outline on the back side of the page to minimize markings, but that involves drawing the letters backwards, so use tracing paper if necessary.
Then, I used a snap blade and cutting mat to cut out the letters. Tape a piece of construction paper underneath and trim any excess paper to fit into whatever sized frames you are using.
BONUS step: Find some chunky frames at the thrift store and spray paint them to match the construction paper. Can't find chunky frames? Go to Ikea.

Inspired by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

In my view, there are two ways that you can come to love a song: you hear a song and something about it immediately knocks you off your feet or it takes you multiple listens to discover all its hidden melodic and lyrical references until you are sucked into it. With "home" by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, it was the former. The first time I heard it, I was hooked. And like all truly great music, it has definitely been inspiring both my fashion and interior decor tastes.

The band uses an eclectic group of musical themes and instruments including wild west-like whistling, heavy base, thumping rhythm, clapping, old-timey piano, lutes, and plenty of almost Mexican sounding horns. These varying instruments and themes evoke a bohemian, wild western, international kind of look.

The western influence definitely led me to a lot of outfits with dramatic hats, colorful scarves, and statement making boots. But there's also something overtly feminine about these outfits: a touch of fur, some leopard print sandals or some red lips, which mirrors the sweet crooning of the female singer, Jade Castrinos.

From an interior design perspective, the music evokes rooms with a collection of non-matching antique furniture, something Dolly Parton would be happy to sit for a spell on. But it's not pure country, there's also something very 70's bohemian rock and roll about the whole thing. So I also love the idea of a lot of Navajo prints and wood textures.

A Steal!

So I'm looking at this awesome want list on Moodboard one afternoon and I fall helplessly in love with these Anat Chelsea boots. Visions of tight pencil skirts and textured tights dance through my head, but alas, while $320 isn't totally out of my price range, it's a bit more than I wanted to spend on a boot with a heel that high that I definitely cannot pull off at work. I'm considering my options when I stumble upon this 6x6 boot over on urban...for only $98!

There's this corner of my bedroom that's just....bleh. It's not that every other area of our apartment is perfect, but at least, I know what I want it to look like. But this area? It's become a depository of jewelry, knickknacks, dvds, books, and magazines. So I looked around for a little inspiration and here's what I came up with.

Something nice and clean, a few little cute vases or bottles (or tea cups even) a few stacked books, maybe a plant or a retro table lamp.

Wednesday = Half Way

Even though I had to work a little this weekend, it actually turned out to be really satisfying. On Friday night, PB got us some super delicious sopresatta, wild boar sausage, gouda, pecorino, and a special brie and we played trivial pursuit (I won!). Saturday night we followed up a much needed trip to the gym with sushi from kotobuki (sooooo delicious) and watched Moon. On Sunday I had brunch with the ladies at Founding Farmers (I've only been talking about doing this since May) followed up with some shopping in Georgetown. I am trying to decide on a new perfume and I've narrowed it down to Stella MaCartney, Burburry's the beat, and Coach Poppy. And (perhaps most importantly) I experimented with above the knee socks.

Oh and we took funny picture of Grizzly while he was sleeping in weird positions. Next weekend I'm planning on cooking dinner with friends, heading to the Dupont Farmer's market, and maybe even trying out a new restaurant.

Crane Mobiles

I really like origami paper. Not that big into actually folding origami, but the papers I see at the art store are always so beautiful that I've been known to buy a pack or two without any specific plans. Not so for the wedding - I had plans. Big plans. Plans that still, actually, didn't have anything to do with folding origami. But with some excess papers floating around, I thought I'd make a couple paper cranes to hang out around the wedding. Then I got some feedback from some savvy lady friends (no, not THAT kind of lady friend! Geez...) that a "couple" wouldn't do. Fortunately, they were willing to help me crank out, like, a couple hundred cranes. I was still a little skeptical of the flock of cranes.. until I saw this wedding on Ruffled:

OH! Now I get it! Gorgeous right? But, I can also see why you need HUNDREDS (or go for a cool thousand if you want to make a wish) because they do kind of need to be in a swarm to have any visual effect.

Then mere DAYS later (again on the wonderfully DIY friendly Ruffled wedding blog), I see this wedding (on the left):

I love how the mason jars add some visual weight (and literal weight) to the mobile. Unfortunately, it seems like everyone and their mother uses mason jars in weddings these days (okay, I guess I was looking at A LOT of outdoor/vintage/diy weddings). That glass is also heavy and could complicate the structural integrity and I didn't want to have lit candles, but empty jars sound kind of... depressing. Then I happened to be poking through the Ikea web catalog and found these:

Perfecto! Oh, and you only want $4 for these adorable lanterns? Um, okay, I'll take a dozen!

So, we strung up the cranes with fishing wire onto some wooden dowels, with the lantern hanging from the center to keep it balanced. And that's the story of how we made these crane mobiles.

Now I just wish I had a backyard with willow trees to hang them from permanently. When I look back at photos from our ceremony, I love how the mobiles dreamily found their way into some frames:

Mobiles are kind of awesome in general - they essentially decorate THE AIR. Not a table, not a wall, just airspace. One tip though: keep those little birdies paper-clipped together from early in the construction process or you will have one big, tangled mobile mess on your hands when you try to set them up. I transported each mobile in it's own brown grocery bag (they're free for now!), which I think saved a ton of hassle.

Bau-HAUS

This is the story of my Bauhaus poster. First purchased when I was young and discovering design (oh 'cause I'm such an expert now) and now ratty and hanging in my bedroom. It traveled across Europe and back to the US. From grad school to my first apartment with PB and it shows. So I was so excited to see that the Bauhaus museum actually ships to the U.S. (anyone speak German, that's what it says, right?). It is a must for the retro modern dwelling. Can you imagine anything cooler on your walls?

Are you as big a fan of Dwell Studio as I am? I'm such a sucker for their gate, chinoiserie, and draper print. Well it looks like they've teamed up with wedding paper divas and are now doing wedding invitations. What a great opportunity to infuse your wedding with some chic, timeless, glamour. And they're super reasonable too. Okay, just a note from me to you.

It might surprise people to know that despite posting about weddings and pink walls I really do try to play it cool. I live in black jeans and frye boots (well outside of work anyway) and I dig that all -white Swedish design and listen to the kinks. But sometimes, I just can't help it...I crave cuteness*...And my desire to be surrounded by brightly colored and/or sparkly intricately crafted objects is just that more intensified around the holidays. For some reason, Anthropologie knows this and yesterday sent me an email linking me to well...this:
Like, come on! Give me a chance to not shrill with girly delight. How many matrioshkas can one store have? And that vintage packaging?I don't stand a chance!

The Fur Hat Guild

It was inevitable. My Eastern European fascination eventually invaded my fashion taste, what can I do? But seriously, is there any more perfect way to top off some curly locks or an ultra feminine frock than with a tall fur hat? I think not. It adds that perfect little amount of masculine hunter or long serving general (depending on which had you choose to adopt) to any feminine look. And believe me, you can wear your coat unbuttoned or a lighter coat because your head is toasty and warm. Oh, I can't wait till it gets a bit colder so I can break mine out!
And there are definitely plenty of fake options out there, no need to do anything that hurts your conscience. What do you think? Have I convinced you?

Well we finally brought our little Grizzly home last week and aside from some puppy bites we have been happily playing all week long. Last weekend we pretty much just hung out with the Grizz all weekend. I love it when he rolls on his back and lets us pat his stomach and makes this goofy face (we call it froggy face).

Chalkboard signs

Ah, signage. So functional and yet an opportunity to get a little creative. There are so many ways to make a sign, but a fun, sturdy DIY option is a good ole' chalkboard sign. I feel like I just discovered chalkboard paint, and I loved seeing M use it in her kitchen.

In terms of signs (see below), they can be playful, with illustrations on the chalkboard itself (upper left, from Wildflower Photos) or simple with an ornamental frame (center right, from 100 Layer Cake). As a menu (lower left and lower right, both from 100 Layer Cake), it communicates a more "casual cafe" atmosphere, as opposed to printed menus, which read more as "fancy restaurant" (which is great too! but different...). This one (top right, from Ruffled) isn't actually a chalkboard, but I loved (and appropriated) the mini-bunting look, using scraps from my oilcloth bunting.

In terms of making chalkboards, it's easy to get spray paint at the hardware store. I recommend using masonite board, which has a super slick side and is usually available at the lumber store for a couple bucks a slab. Know what sized boards you want and have the lumber yard cut the slab down for you on the spot - this will save you a a huge hassle. Also, it's used for really cheap siding in construction, so you may get a question on what you plan to use it for because they may want to advise you to try something sturdier - go ahead and let them know its for a chalkboard sign (not building a house) and they'll probably understand.

The paint instructions will tell you to prep the board BEFORE writing on them by coating it once, using the side of a white chalk stick. What they don't tell you is that it may be be hard to then dust the whole thing off, so be prepared with more than a box of kleenex to wipe it down.

Another tip I got was using chalk PENS to get the bold, crisp look that you see on some restaurant menu chalkboards. As you can see, the color is quite bold. Just remember to plan your sign before starting because these chalk pens do NOT like to erase.

Mussels a la Jose Andreas

Living in DC and having a bit of a ham/cheese (aka Spain) obsession, PB and I are big Jose Andreas fans (we went to Cafe Atlantico on our first date). The other day we were watching his tasty Galicia show on Made in Spain and he made this mouthwatering mussels and potatoes dish that I just had to try.

You need: mussels, fingerling potatoes, bay leaves, olive oil, albarino wine, pimenton (Spanish paprika).

Peel and then boil the potatoes for about 15 minutes (stick a fork in them to see if they are ready: if the fork easily pierces the potato they are done). Then use a fork to mash them and season with salt and pepper.

Then heat olive oil in a pan (one that has a lid) and once it's smoking hot toss in the mussels and 3 or 4 bay leaves plus about .75 cup of wine. and then cover. Jose said that you could count to cinco and the mussels would be open and ready to take out but I had to cook them a bit longer.

Once the mussels open, take them out of their shells and place them on top of the mashed potatoes. Then season the dish with plenty of olive oil and pimenton.

PB and I both felt this needed something a little sweet, some garlic or shallots would definitely do the trick. Happy eating!

Inspired by the Like

In doing some research for bangs (and yes, I'm calling it reseach) I came across some pictures of the band, the like. I remember hearing them years ago, but I don't remember them having such impecable mod style. I don't even need to say what type of fashion this inspires: false lashes, stripes, opaque tights, flats, bangs, and red lips . But it definitely also inspires some fun retro furnishings. Cleary, any interior decor based on their music is first and foremost: retro. The playful style of the Like's music would definitely be mirrored by this whimsical arrangement of colorful plates. And while their look might read tough and sometimes a little androgenous, their music is overtful feminine and playful, making me crave a little girly pink. The way this room incorporates shag carpeting, and that mad men style headboard definitely makes me feel it would be the perfect place to pop in the like and write my diary. Plus, isn't that hello kitty perfectly suited to the room? And can't you imagine the band getting ready in the bathroom below? I love the seafoam and pink. But I also love the punches of primary colors in their look. So rooms with tons of red, yellow, and blue definitely also seem to go with the music.

Thursday = Past Halfway

I got a little distracted with the new puppy this week so I'm just getting to Wednesday now. This last weekend the weather was beautiful and I only had to work one day of it (yay?), so I was pretty happy. On Saturday we went to check out the Rally to Restore Sanity, but once we realized we couldn't see or hear a thing we packed it in and headed to a bar for some bloody marys and to watch the rally on tv. Then we went for an early dinner to Russia House and I got some delicious Pelmeni. On Sunday, I grabbed some brunch at Zaytinya. I had this dish with toast, poached eggs, greek yogurt and paprika and pepper. I think I could learn to make that, right? Just need to learn to poach an egg. Sunday night we watched the Living Dead and ate halloween treats but I was so scared I forgot to take pictures....

This weekend we're just going to lay low and play with Grizzly and I can't wait!

Pinwheels, Part 1

Believe it or not, TD and I talked about pinwheel decorations as soon as we found our lovely park site for our wedding. I immediately thought about using origami paper because I love the colors and Japanese floral patterns. As I started doing some wedding inspiration research, I came across two gorgeous weddings on the fabulously funky Green Wedding Shoes. First, this highly stylized wedding with an awesome explosion of pinwheels and color:

Don't you love the texture of all those pinwheels on the wedding arch? Then there's this much more natural and easy-breezy, east coast wedding:

I didn't really need to be sold on pinwheels, but it was fun to see it applied in different ways. In terms of making pinwheels, I turned to the one... the only... Martha Stewart. I modified (err, simplified) her instructions, but they are a great baseline.

I ordered wooden dowels and map pins from Blick art and used artist tape to wrap the dowel "stems", but in retrospect spray-painting probably would have been better, although messier. Martha's two-sided pinwheels look absolutely delicious, but to keep it simple (I was delegating some of the labor), I just used one sheet of origami paper.

After finding the center (easier to see your pencil marks on the plain white side), cut out to the corners, leaving a radius of an inch or so uncut around the center.

Of the eight "corners" fold in every other one to the center until it looks like a pinwheel. Let the points overlap the center dot by half an inch or so. Then pierce the map pin through center and into the dowel. Push that map pin in as far as it will go, but it probably not go in all the way, which is good because that allows the pinwheel to move.

With some help from a couple (champagne and cupcake fueled) worker bee friends, we made a good pile of pinwheels to decorate with!

Favorite Bangs (yes, I'm talking about hair)

I've had bangs for almost 4 years now. I gave up on them one summer and let me tell you the sight of my forehead for a few weeks was enough to send me right back to my hair dresser to chop off those wisps. I know I look better with bangs, but the question is, now that the wedding is over and I can do anything I like with my hair, what kind of bangs do I want? I love love love the style of Anna Karina. Maybe I should adopt some ultra short bangs? The problem is that while this looks cute with a bob, I'm not so sure how it would look with my longer hair. Also, I always fear I'm going to look more Bettie Page than Anna Karina.

Zooey Deschenel's bangs change frequently, but I'm a huge fan of how they look here. Not quite totally even, a little messed up, great for curly or straight hair.

Okay, I swoon for this hair, I seriously do. But I worry that I'd miss cute little short bangs if I had mine this long.

I would love to have platinum blond hair, but alas it's just not going to happen for me. That said, I die for Erin Fetherston's hair. So chic and cool looking.

Inspired by the Drums

One of my first favorite bands was the beach boys. And by first, I mean I listened to endless summer on my fisher price record player (that is first). I'm pretty sure most of my music taste has flowed from that first exposure to music. So I got ridiculously excited when I heard the Drums. A self-described indie surf band, they are ridiculously catchy. They have lyrics like "I just want to be with you my dear" and "if you fall asleep down by the water, baby I'll carry you all the way home." Even better, it's not just straight up surf music but more...surf music meets the 80s (think the smiths, or joy division). I don't know what it is, but putting it on makes me want to ride shot gun with my feet out the windows, stay up till 4 am on a patio drinking with friends and wear a lot of sparkly eyeshadow. And I have to say, due to it's Southern California vibe it's been conjuring up some very distinct interior and fashion design ideas in my head.

For this kind of music I want exposed and untreated wood, shag carpets, succulents, and retro couches. Definitely not anything new or shiny that my wet swimsuit would ruin.

From a fashion perspective, the drums inspire a couple different looks. Either something super easy and sunkissed:

We're Going To Start This Nice. And Easy.

I am so excited to announce that my my multi-talented friend, call sign "GreenBalloon", is going to contribute some DIY projects to Subtlety of Taste. In addition to being a skilled artist, print maker, and just generally great craftsperson, she also has wonderful taste. You can see some of her awesome printmaking work here (she actually letterpressed save the dates for my own wedding). Her wedding was filled with so many touching little details, I knew others would definitely want to see some of these projects and maybe incorporate them into their own weddings. So without further ado:

So, the Matrioshka and I go way back. On the topic of taste, we've spent many an LA traffic jam and I5 cruise control stretch discussing such fundamental questions as, "IS taste something that can be objectively GOOD and BAD?" These nuggets were of course mere toppings on a conversational salad of Reality Bites quoting, but I digress...

I also recently had my wedding, after only a couple of months of planning and preparation. You may have, like myself, enjoyed M's little "tasteful adventures" on S.o.T. But in this planning process, I benefited from her headstart on wedding planning, not to mention her subtle curation of the overwhelming number of wedding blogs. For that I am grateful, and feel somewhat compelled to give back. As such, M has agreed to let me contribute the occasional post, focused initially on some of the wedding projects I took on and where such inspiration came from. Without further ado...

I needed to start with an easy one because a) I have a cold, b) it seems appropriate?

So, bunting. Who doesn't love bunting? It's vaguely nostalgic, bright & cheery, and pretty much means "there's a party going on. here."

I give you... bunting.

In terms of making bunting, it's pretty straight forward: fabric or paper triangles (or squares or half-crescents if you like to break with tradition) and some kind of cord or rope. It really depends on how you are going to use it: indoor or outdoor, flying free or against a backing, etc. You can make it much more complicated (and beautiful) by sewing two pieces of fabric together (with lining for structure) and using satin ribbon to string it all together. That would be great for accenting a table at a refined indoor reception. But that satin ribbon is going to untie on a breezy day at an outdoor wedding. In an indoor environment, people are more likely to inspect the details (but not necessarily) and at an outdoor event you just need big color that won't get lost in the landscape.

Our wedding was outdoors, so we went for big color and sturdy materials. I picked up some brightly patterned oilcloth remnant pieces at various fabric stores (oil cloth isn't cheap and since you're cutting it up anyway, go for those discounted remnants) and some gardening ribbon from the hardware store. Oh, and a stapler.

It doesn't look like much, but you could see that bunting from across the park. "Party. Here." Mission accomplished.

sigh...pink walls

There was a time when we were really seriously considering painting our bedroom bright pink. After we moved, I fell in love with grey bedrooms but sometimes I'll come across a picture and my yearning for pink walls is totally reignited. This one below did it for me yesterday. I especially love the look of pink and red together (a color combination I really to use when dressing).
There is just something so happy and warm about pink. For some reason, I feel it is an inevitably retro color. And I love how it can either be super feminine or masculine depending on its saturation. When you get super saturated pinks (dare I say, "hot") as opposed to the more baby pinks above, it becomes almost so over the top that it stops being overly girly and even...masculine (definitely helped by a huge stag in the room below).

Dreaming of a White Christmas

I know, I know...it's not even Halloween. But I found these pictures yesterday and I knew I wouldn't be able to sit on them for the next two months. Basically, it comes down to this: I love me a beautiful, tall, and graceful Christmas tree. I love the smell as it permeates the house making you think about your family, yummy pies, and the thrill of wrapped presents. But that same smell....unfortunately gives someone some respiratory issues. A fake tree just seems like the saddest solution, doesn't it? Until I saw these pictures of an awesome vintage style fake white tree. Ordinarily I would not be into a fake tree, but I think I could get behind this.

I am definitely going to be on the look out for some awesome beading and gold ornaments in the weeks to come.

Two Drastically Different Affairs

I really thought that once I actually had my wedding I would just be totally over looking at them...not so....at all. In some ways I enjoy looking at them even more. Instead of mining them for inspiration, they just remind me of those crazy wonderful feelings I experienced all day long.

Both of these weddings caught my eye in the past two weeks and I had to post a couple pictures and refer you to them because they are awesome in totally different ways. This first wedding comes from Sweden (not a surprise that I like it given my love of Swedish design). It took place in a green house from the 1800s! Isn't the bride gorgeous?! Her dress is Isabel Marant. And the sweetest part is that she and her husband performed as a gift to each other.

The hills of Santa Teresa

When PB and I were booking our hotels in Rio we ran up against a little problem...the problem being we waited too long and all the hotels we wanted to stay at along Ipanema were booked. And while we were initially a little sad about it, we realized that it presented the perfect opportunity to stay in the Santa Teresa areas in the hills of Rio. We stayed in a villa converted to hotel called Relais Solar that presented amazing views of the entire city and quiet mornings reading out by the pool. We ate delicious kale and fried pork and feijoada along with these crispy cheese ravioli (I have no idea what they are called) at Bar do Mineiro. We also had a wonderful lunch at Espirito Santa of crab filled plantains, delicious vodka caipirinhas (you have to mix it up sometimes) and a coconut stew with shrimp. And we wondered along amazingly beautiful winding streets watching the way too cute street car pass by.

If you get a chance to go to Rio, I definitely recommend at least spending a meal and a few hours in the neighborhood. Oh, but don't try and take pictures of the tiled store shown above...you'll get in trouble :)

This past weekend I flew out to California to celebrate one of my best friend's weddings (more to come on that!), and have a birthday celebration with my family. Then PB and I flew to Las Vegas for my first visit ever. Despite the fact that I am not a gambler I did enjoy the food (Bouchon? Yes, please) and crazy thematic hotels.
And this weekend, I am looking forward to actually getting a reasonable number of blog posts completed, karaoke in Annandale, and finally getting Grizzly (oh that's what we've decided to name the puppy!).
